The History
After acquiring 100 pounds, Bill Mathers opened a small shoes store in Ipswich, QLD. In 1957, Chermside Shopping Centre opened. It was the first Regional Shopping Centre in Australia. In 1961, Shirley Shoes (4 stores) was purchased, followed by Vic Jen Jensens (7 stores) in 1963. By 1970 Mathers had moved into NSW and opened in Lismore. Bill's only son Robert took over as Chairman and Managing Director in 1973, later becoming Sir Robert Mathers. In 1986, Mathers Enterprises purchased Flints shoes (79 stores), before being taken over by Kinney Shoes in 1988. Finally Mathers made its way to Melbourne in 1999, opening in Southland. In December 2005, Mathers had 94 stores around Australia (including 4 Skids stores).
